Robert Legvold is Marshall D. Shulman Professor Emeritus at Columbia University. He is a former director of Columbia's Harriman Institute and member of the Department of Political Science, where he taught for thirty years. His primary interest is in the foreign policy of Russia and the other post-Soviet states and their impact on the international politics of East Asia and Western Europe.
From 1978 to 1984, Legvold served as director of Soviet studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. He received his PhD from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in 1967. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Social Sciences.
